Chennai: The 30-year-old daily bet takes a selfie in Napier Bridge sneaking into the coin river and standing deep in mud screaming for almost eight hours before he was saved on Wednesday morning.
The man, who was later identified as I Karthik, fell around 10pm on Tuesday.
He held one of the pillars of the bridge and began to shout, but no one above heard it.
Around 6 in the morning, pedestrians were stretched to find the man standing in the water and warned police personnel at the checkpoint near the warning of the war.
Sub-Inspector Kumar and Constable Chinnasamy from Police Anna Square went to the place and dropped the rope near the man who tied him to his waist and held tightly.
He was withdrawn.
Karthi, a resident of Sami Pillai Street in Peraamet, told the police that he came to Anna Square to look around when he dropped his cellphone and sneaked into the river while taking a selfie leaning against the Parapet wall.
The police made him bathed in a public toilet near the beach and took him to the Government General Hospital Rajiv Gandhi before sending him home at the Autorickshaw.
An officer said Karthik, who was not drunk at the time, tried to get most of the stretch of bright enough as the background in the picture when he leaned too far ahead and lost his phone and fell when trying to take a falling device.
The police said the decorative lights throughout the stretch pulled many visitors and there were several incidents like that in the past.
