Mumbai: Mumbai police arrested a 35-year-old man in Bengaluru for trying to squeeze Rs 2 Crore from the builder here, an official said on Friday.
The defendant, identified as Mahesh Sanjeev Pujari, was arrested in Karnataka by the Malad police team on Wednesday and was taken to Mumbai on Thursday, he said.
“Pujari had called a builder through the mobile application on May 2021, which showed that the call was made of international number.
He demanded Rs 2 Crore from the builder and threatened to kill him,” the official said.
When the builder repeatedly received a call from the defendant, he complained to the police and in December 2021, a case of extortion was registered, he said.
“When the defendant used a call application to threaten, the anti-extortion cell from Mumbai police also began investigating this case,” he said.
Police took the technical assistance of cyber cells and found that the defendant was in Bengaluru.
Thus, the Malad police team was sent to Bengaluru, where he caught Pujari, he said.
“The defendant was arrested.
Even though he did not do any work, he was technically healthy and had computer knowledge,” said Dhananjay Ligade, senior inspector of the Malad police station.
Pujari was produced in front of the court, which returned it until January 17, he said.
