Ten days after the video emerged from an Indian Sikh taxi driver was attacked outside the JFK airport in New York, the New York port authority, and the New Jersey Police Department said on Saturday that a man, identified as Mohamed Hassanain, has been arrested for attack 3 January.
The incident sparked anger throughout the world after a clip of attack on the driver was uploaded online.
The clip showed accusations repeatedly punching the Sikh driver while throwing abuse.
In that video, taxi driver turban can be seen being torn down.
Officials said Hassanain was being charged with “attack on the third level as a racial crime”, and “harassment that was exacerbated”.
Sikh leaders thanked law enforcement agencies to us for their actions.
Shiroman Akali spokesman Dal Daljeet Singh Cheema said, “The defendant must receive a strict sentence for the crime he did.”
