Kolkata: A 27-year-old man, who was identified as Om Prakash Sharma aka Shiv, was found unconscious with deep injuries in his head in BK PAL Avenue near the Maternity Hospital Abinash Dutta under the Jorabagan police station in Kolkata North 3am on Wednesday.
The police suspected the man, whose conditions were declared critical, may have been hit with heavy objects, such as stones or bricks.
Sharma runs a roadside restaurant with his father.
He used to sleep at night on a bench near the restaurant.
“At night, he was beaten above his head when someone else, including his father, who was nearby, slept well,” said a police officer, adding that the CCTV recording area had been examined.
Some people claimed that the man groaned in pain that woke his father, another said that some people passed warned them.
The man rushed to RG Kar Hospital, from where he then shifted to college medical and hospital after his condition deteriorated.
Local residents claimed that it was a stoneman style attack on the man when 12 people had died on the streets of the city in the six-month range in 1989.
But the police ruled out this.
