Washington: A gunman who shot dead five people at the Maryland newspaper office appeared on Tuesday before the jury who had to decide whether he spent the rest of his life in prison or mental hospital.
Armed with a rifle, Jarrod Ramos exploded into the Capital Gazette newsroom in Annapolis, an hour outside the capital of Washington, on June 28, 2018, where he killed four journalists and sales assistants before being arrested.
It was one of the worst attacks at media outlets in the United States and sent shock waves through the country.
It was charged with murder, Ramos, now 41, pleaded guilty but said he was crazy during the attack and irresponsible criminally.
He must now convince the jury that his judgment is disturbed by mental problems.
At the opening of the trial on Tuesday, his lawyer said he suffered, among others, autism spectrum disorders and compulsive disorders and delusions.
“This is terrible because Mr.
Ramos doesn’t believe what he is doing wrong,” Katy O’Donnell said, quoted by local Webal-TV channels.
He admitted that he had spent two years preparing his attack, he mixed his target, and even took the Chess club membership to anticipate being locked up for years afterwards.
Ramos has a troubled relationship with Capital Gazette after not managed to attack him to manipulate defiations and threaten it several times online.
He was very angry with a paper for an article published in 2011 entitled “Jarrod wants to be your friend,” Where the newspaper tells the trial of a young woman who has been harassed on the internet, and who has made it equal 90 days.
Prison sentence.
The test is set to the last 10 days.
