The marginalized part contributed 80% of suicide in Mysore

MySuru: MySuru Regency reported 923 deaths because of suicide between February 2017 and February 2021 according to the police record and almost 80% of these cases came from socially and economically fortunate society, according to a study by Mysuru University.
Studies by the Center for social exclusion and inclusive policy said four out of five people who died of suicide came from the SC / ST community, OBC or minority.
This research was conducted by DC Nanjunda from the Study Center and Lancy D’Souza from the Department of Psychology, Maharaja College.
Their analysis was based on data collected from 23 police stations in the district.
Of the 923 registered suicide cases, 57% came from urban groups and the rest of the rural areas.
Mental illness, loans and health problems are registered as the main cause of suicide.
Nearly 33% of death by suicide is by those aged 21-30 years.
According to research, socio-economic factors such as low school (24% of cases), unskilled jobs (43%) and poor income (74%) were significantly related to higher suicide levels.
Nanjunda told Tii: “For the first time, it was observed that most suicides were seen among the ‘excluded categories’.
Our research shows mental illness and poverty are two big reasons.
There is an urgent need to overcome this twin problem.” He said analysis The data available with the Karnataka Government Department can help find a lasting solution for many socio-economic problems.
However, Dr.
Raveesh BN, Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry, Mysuru Medical College and Research Institute, said the data studied by researchers did not provide a complete picture.
“We have to take this data with a pinch of salt because many suicides have never been revealed.
Many people have trouble committing suicide by jumping into the river or with road accident engineering that is not classified as suicide in the data compiled by the national crime record bureau.
We have to start the exclusive suicide registry in the hospital.
This will help us take more scientific prevention steps, “he explained.
Professor said the accident and death by suicide for a large number of deaths in the country every year and this level could be reduced with effective steps.
