New York: New York Mayor Eric Adams on Monday revised the death toll from a high fire, said 17 people were killed, two fewer than initial thoughts.
Adams said nine adults and eight children died on Sunday on Sunday in Bronx.
He did not immediately give a reason for the lower number of deaths.
The fire starts with an electric space heater that does not work.
While the fire was broken only a small part of the building, the smoke escaped through the open door of the apartment into the stairs, blocking the runaway route.
Adams said it seems that smoke spread through the open door which should be closed automatically.
He said investigators would see if there was a matter of maintenance with the door.
The building is equipped with a smoke alarm, but some residents said they initially ignored it because the alarm was very common in building 120 units.
