Nagpur: After remaining on the paper for the past 11 years, the NAG River pollution reduction project has been approved by the EFC Financing Financing Committee (EFC) of the Union Ministry of Finance Wednesday.
However, the high-powered committee has requested Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to raise property taxes to pay for operations and maintenance (O & M) projects.
Also, the project costs are likely to be reduced by RS100 Crore or more.
Commissioner of Radhakrishnan B City gave a presentation on the project to EFC and representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Niti Ayog, Jalshakti, the National River Conservation Directorate (NRC), urban affairs, etc.
He was accompanied by Superintending Engineers Manoj Talewar, Executive Engineer Shweta Banerjee and Technical Consultant Mohammed Israel.

NMC requires more than RS10 Crore per year for O & M from waste treatment plants (STP) and other infrastructure under the project .
O & M is not part of the project costs.

NMC has launched a new property tax system in 2015-16, which increases taxes of 2-4 times.
Since then, tax has not been revised.
Now, the NMC General Agency must pass the resolution to increase taxes.
The Civic body will require state approval as well if it is to introduce new components for sanitation in property taxes.
The source added EFC also said it would reduce project costs through more than RS100 Crore.
“At present, the costs have been done at RS2.117.56 Crore.
NMC has made RS132 Crore provisions for project management consultants (PMC) at a cost.
The amount is 10% of the project engineering fee.
EFC said the center will only bear 5% of the cost.

Radhakrishnan told TII, “This is a historic moment for NMC because maybe the first time the government approves the project to dispose of waste and other infrastructure for the resurrection of the body of the body.
