Tegucigalpa: Local Liner Group Lenca Honduras Honduras was shot dead on Sunday, police said.
Pablo Isabel Hernandez was killed on the ground near the city of San Marcos de Caique when he headed to the local church with his father and brother, a police spokesman, Cristian Manuel Nolasco said.
Nolasco said the ambush may be related to personal or political disputes.
Hernandez served as director of the radio station known as “Radio Tenan, Native Voice Lencas.” He is also active in indigenous and environmental education.
The Honduran Community Media Association said in a statement that it “considered another murder of another attack on freedom of expression and defense of human rights.” Hernandez is the second Lena leader who was killed in less than a year.
In March 2020, Activist Lenca Juan Carlos Cerros Escalante was shot dead in the city of Nueva Granada, on the Caribbean coast of Cortes.
He has helped lead a fight against the construction of dams.
Both Hernandez and Cerros Escalante belonged to the same indigenous community with Berta Caceres, the defender of the Winner of Prizes and customary rights killed in 2016.
According to rights groups, more than three dozen environmental activists have been killed in Honduras since death.
Cáceres is one of the founders of the National Board of the Popular and Indigenous Honduras Organization.
He helped regulate the opposition to the Agua Zarca Dam project, which will be built on the Galcarque River.
The river accommodates spiritual interests for Lenca people and becomes a critical source of water.
Dam project remains frozen.
