Kolkata: Although Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) takes comprehensive steps to prevent severe puddle, the focus will be on a large stretch of bypass Em and Behala-Joka belt after alert the rain is heard by the Alipore weather office.
The KMC drainage department has been asked to continue to prepare an adequate portable pump to water the storm water from the large stretch of Mukundapur, Nayabad, Panchasayar, Madurdaha, and part of the Patuli.
Residents of these areas experienced flooding earlier this week.
Even though the storm water receded a few days ago, residents were afraid of warning the rain that might inundate this bypass environment again.
“We have arranged portable pumps to spend storm water from low areas if there are heavy showers.
This will provide assistance to the residents of Mukundapur, Madurdaha, Panchasayar and Nayabad,” said a KMC drainage department official.
However, the official admitted it would be a climbing task to provide immediate assistance to the population because these areas did not have a drainage network.
“If heavy rains on Tuesday, residents must suffer waterlogging for at least a few days even if we press portable pump services.
We also need a prolonged dry mantra to water the storm water,” the official said.
Similar settings have been made for residents of Jokes and Low Lip Areas.
Given the warning, KMC and Kolkata police have decided to establish several emergency shelters for residents of remote areas in Garden Reach, Behala, Jokes, Garia, and Bypass.
“If necessary, we might have to shift people from the low laying area to these camps,” said an official.
The KMC drainage department keeps all heavy duty pumps ready at a large drainage pumping station to flow storm water quickly if the water is severe.
