Gurgaon: A team of wildlife officials carrying binoculars and with cameras hanging on their necks ventured several wetlands on Sundays for the number of birds.
The census of the country’s wetlands covered Sultanpur and Najafgarh Jheel National Park in Gurgaon and Bhindawas and Mandhoti Wetlands in Jhajjar.
This is the second time such a census has been done in Haryana to assess the bird population on the country’s wetlands.
The first census in February 2020.
Last year, because of the pandemic, the event was canceled.
With this number, the Department of Wildlife also marks the world’s wetlands that will come on February 2, 11 members with three members with three members of each National Park Sultanpur and Najafgarh Jhuel.
A similar team covered Jhajjar’s wetlands.
After everyday event, the team marked their observations and made a list of bird finals.
“It was concluded that Sultanpur National Park had a total of 28.026 birds and 124 species,” said Rajesh Chahal, Wildlife Inspector, Gurgaon.
The main winter duck includes Greylag Goose, North Pintail, General Pochard, North Shoveller, Gadwall, Eurasia COOT etc.
The numbers for other wetlands are not yet available.
The 2020 census has recorded 214 bird species across wetlands.
The number of birds, Priyanka Chaudhary, member, Delhi Zoo, in Sultanpur, said, “There are three methods for calculating birds.
The first is called ‘point count’, where the calculation of all birds detected by vision and sound by one observer which lies in a fixed position during a certain period noted.
The second is ‘line transect’, where the observer must calculate the birds along the line; first, five meters on the left and then again on the row.
The third method is to count all the birds In certain trees.
This is only used when fewer birds.
“Some rare species seen in Sultanpur include a larger greater eagle, red-headed falcon, elang imperial, general ketrel, white tail lapwing and godwit black tail.
The National Park is also preparing to welcome the Ministry of Environment of the Union, Bhupender Singh Yadav, and the Chairman of the Minister of Manohar Lal Khattar in February 2.
February 2021, Sultanpur National Park and Bhindawas Wildlife Reserve are included in the Ramsar list.
Haryana has around 1,441 wetlands, but only two are protected under the Ramsar agreement.
Sanjay Sharma’s bird expert said that Sultanpur National Park has a variety of winter water poultry and residents.
After years, there has been a black-necked stork nest that is successful in the park too, he added.
Chahal said that the survey revealed that birds migrated to wetlands during the winter, representing a healthy sign.
In February, last year, Birders organized large bird days in NCR- exercises carried out throughout the country.
The event was first held on February 22, 2004, when 236 species of birds were recorded in the NCR.
Then in 2020, 253 species of birds were seen, higher than 247 in 2019.
In 2018, 251 bird species were seen, and in 2017, 268.
In 2015 and 2016, the number of birds was 239 and 228 respectively.
