WASHINGTON: A federal prisoner in a high-security prison in Colorado died Monday in a change with another inmates, marking the third time a prisoner had been killed in US Federal Prison last month.
Jamarr Thompson, 33, was declared dead Monday afternoon at USP Florence, shortly after prison staff members responded to the fight, the Prison Bureau said.
Thompson’s death is the latest security problem for the federal prison system, which has been hit by chronic violence, serious violations and persistent staff shortages.
His death also came because the Ministry of Justice faced pressure in the installation of Democrats in Congress to take action to reform the body.
Last month, a 61-year-old man died after a fight at USP Tucson in Arizona.
And a 32-year-old man was killed last week after fighting with other detainees at USP Canaan in Waymart, Pennsylvania.
The prison bureau said staff members were called to respond to a fight between Thompson and other inmates around 2:30 a.m.
and “immediately initiated the save steps” but Thompson was said to be killed by an emergency medical crew.
Other detainees involved in the battle were treated for minor injuries, officials said.
Thompson serves more than five years of punishment for bank robbery efforts and has been held in prison – which is home to more than 700 male inmates – since March.
The prison complex in Florence is home to several federal prisons, including what is called a supermax, which accommodates some of the most famous prisoners in the country.
Senator Dick Durbin, Chair of the Senate Justice Committee, has called for the Attorney General Merrick Garland to fire the Prison Bureau of Director Michael Carvajal, saying he has failed to overcome various mistory.
In doubling his call for Carvajal shooting last week, Durbin, D-Il, referred to a series of recent violent incidents in the federal prison system, including attacks in November at FCI Fort Dix, a low security prison in Burlington County, New Jersey, Run by the same guards who are responsible for Federal Prison Manhattan when investors Jeffrey Epstein suicide.
An inmate was stabbed in the eyeball in the attack.
