WASHINGTON: Top General Mark Milley Top Milley testified on Tuesday that demanded that he made his colleagues in the reduced months of the turbulent Donald Trump government intended to “deescalate” tensions and former presidents not intend to attack China.
“I know, I am sure, President Trump does not intend to attack the Chinese,” Chair of the Staff Chief Staff told the Senate Armed Service Committee.
“My job at that time was to Descalate.
My message was consistent again: Stay calm and steady and deescalate.
We will not attack you,” he said.
Call between Milley and his Chinese colleague General Li Zuocheng was first revealed in the book “Peril” by Washington Post Reporters Bob Woodward and Robert Costa.
The first call was on October 30, four days before the US presidential election, and the second on January 8, two days after Trump’s supporters invaded US Capitol in an effort to prevent the victory of Democratic Election Joe Biden.
Some Republican Parliament members accused Milley beyond his authority and asked him to resign.
In the testimony of his Senate, Milley defended his actions and said that the call was coordinated with the defense secretary at that time.
“Specific goals of October and January calls are produced by concerning intelligence which causes us to believe that Chinese are worried about the attack by the US,” Milley said.
“This military-military communication at the highest level is very important for the security of the United States in the context of military action, managing the crisis, and preventing the war between the great powers armed with nuclear weapons,” he said.
“At short times I try to change or influence the process, confirm authority, or enter myself into the command chain,” Milley added.
“I firmly believe in military civilian control as an important basic principle for this republic and I am committed to ensuring the military net from domestic politics.” Milley also handled phone calls he had with Nancy Pelosi, Democratic speaker from the House of Representatives, where – according to “danger” – he asked for a summit that no danger of Trump launched a nuclear attack unilaterally.
“I tried to convince him that nuclear launch was governed by a very specific and intentional process,” Millley told the Senate Committee.
“He was worried and made various personal references that characterized the President,” Milley said.
“I explained that the President was the only nuclear launch authority but he did not launch himself.” According to the book, Pelosi, referring to Trump, said: “You know he’s crazy.
He’s crazy for a long time” and Milley responded: “Madam speaker, I agree with you in everything.” In his testimony, Milley said he told the pelosion that he “did not meet the requirements” to determine the mental health of the president.
