Islamabad: Pakistan held a meeting in Afghanistan with envoys from the United States, China and Russia on Thursday as Pakistani foreign ministers warned their neighbors to the threshold of economic collapse.
State grouping, known as “Troika Plus” met formally for the first time since the Taliban took over Afghanistan on August 15.
“The involvement with Afghanistan not only has to continue but must be increased for several reasons,” Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said in opening comments at meetings in Islamabad.
“No one wants to see recurrence into the Civil War, no one wants the economic collapse that will spur instability; everyone wants terrorist elements operating in Afghanistan to be handled effectively and we all want to prevent the new refugee crisis,” he said.
Humanitarian agencies further enhance fears that Afghanistan slipped into a terrible humanitarian crisis when the economy slumped because the kiosk in most assistance and restrictions on the banking system was carried out by the international government since the Taliban took over.
Pakistan has asked the government, including the United States, to allow development assistance to flow to Afghanistan to prevent collapse.
It also asked them to withdraw billions of assets owned by the Afghan central bank abroad.
“Today, Afghanistan stands on the verge of economic collapse,” said Qureshi.
Pakistan has also discussed the idea of Afghanistan joining CPEC, multi-billion dollar infrastructure projects with China, which came under the banis belt and Road Initiative Beijing (BRI).
Thursday’s conference is the latest in a series of diplomatic meetings in the region.
Afghan Foreign Minister who was appointed by the Taliban made a three-day visit to Islamabad to discuss the trade and other bonds this week, while Indian neighbors held a conference for regional countries on Wednesday, although Pakistan’s arch-rivals did not attend the meeting.
