The United Nations: The UN Security Council on Friday called for a ceasefire in Ethiopia, expressing “deep concerns” for escalating battles in the north of the country affected by conflict.
“The Security Council members revealed deep concerns about the expansion and intensification of military clashes in northern Ethiopia,” the body said in a joint statement.
“They further called to end hostility and to negotiate a lasting ceasefire and for the creation of conditions for the commencement of an inclusive Ethiopian national dialogue to resolve the crisis.” To the 15 council member countries, who have struggled to reach a shared position on the conflict in Ethiopia, released the statement as Tigrayan rebels threatening the capital Addis Ababa, a year into battle.
The Board also expressed concern over the humanitarian and national stability situation, and “reaffirm their strong commitment to sovereignty, political independence, territorial integrity and Ethiopian unity.” The Board’s public meeting set for Friday has been postponed until Monday.
