Geneva: The United Nations urged the Taliban to maintain “promises,” including promises to give amnesty to former government workers in Afghanistan, showed inclusive for women and allowed girls to stay in school.
“The Taliban has made a number of statements that on the surface convincingly,” said UN Human Rights spokesman Rupert Colville told reporters Tuesday in Geneva.
“But their actions talk deeper than words, and it’s very early now – it’s very liquid.” He said the Taliban appointment “needs to be respected.” “Understandably, given the history of their past, these declarations have been welcomed with several skepticism,” Colville added.
“However, the promises have been made, and whether they are honored or damaged will be examined carefully.” Colville alluded to comment the day before from UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres about “cold reports” of human rights violations and restrictions on rights – especially for women and girls – in the area captured by the Taliban in a few weeks.
He also called the UN member countries to “use their influence” with the Taliban to protect civil life.
