Washington: The United States will provide $ 144 million to the Afghan people who have faced a large humanitarian crisis under the Taliban, State Secretary Tony Blinken announced here.
Assistance will be given directly to independent international humanitarian and non-governmental organizations, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), UN children’s funds (UNICEF), international organizations for migration (IOM), and the World Health Organization (whose), following the examination and spacious monitoring, said Blinken on Thursday.
“This funding provides direct support to some of the more than 18 million susceptible Afghans in need in the region, including Afghan refugees in neighboring countries,” he said.
With this, the total American humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan and for Afghan refugees in this region increased to almost $ 474 million in 2021, the number of greatest assistance from any country, said Blinken.
“This will enable our partners to provide self-saving protection, food security support, essential health care, winterization, logistics, and emergency food assistance in response to increased humanitarian needs that are exacerbated by lack of health care, covid-19, drought, malnutrition , and what will come winter, “said Secretary of State.
“To be clear, this humanitarian assistance will benefit the Afghans and not the Taliban, which we will continue to be responsible for the commitments they have made,” he said.
Observing that the neighboring Afghanistan has long organized one of the largest and most prolonged displaced situations in the world, Blinken thanked the host countries and urged them so that their borders remain open to Afghanistan who were seeking international protection.
“With this new humanitarian funding, we will continue to support our partners in this region with the help of lives and protection services that save the Afghan refugees, while we continue to support Afghans who need within the Afghanistan,” Blinken said.
