Dubai: United States on Monday announced an additional $ 165 million in humanitarian assistance for Yemen, when a war-hit country continued to face what was called the United Nations from the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.
Yemen’s conflict flared up in 2014 when Iran’s Huthi rebels supported by the capital Sanaa, encouraged Saudi LED intervention to sustain internationally recognized governments in the following year.
The battle has killed tens of thousands, replacing millions and leaving around 80 percent of Yemen depending on assistance.
“The US announced today $ 165 million in additional humanitarian assistance for Yemen,” said the Lenderking team, US special envoys for Yemen.
“We believe that taking immediate steps to reduce the humanitarian crisis and save lives can contribute to advancing in the peace process,” he told a virtual press conference.
Five million Yemen is on the threshold of starvation, and around 50,000 people live in conditions such as hunger – the first time the critical level of hunger has been achieved in two years, according to the UN World Food Program.
The United Nations has warned that hunger can be part of Yemen’s “reality” this year.
“The US cannot do this alone,” said Lenderking.
“Other donors, especially regional donors, must increase their contribution.” The donor conference earlier this year collected $ 1.7 billion in state aid – only half the target.
