WASHINGTON: US Attorney General Merrick Garland inaugurated a new policy on Monday which extensively prohibiting prosecutors from telephone records and email recordings, sudden shifts after Trump’s administration secretly seized notes from several rooted outlets to leaks.
In addition to new policies, Garland reaffirmed that the Ministry of Justice will also provide their support behind the new media shield legislation to make a permanent policy.
“The free and free press is very important for the functioning of our democracy,” said the memo.
“The Ministry of Justice will no longer use a mandatory legal process for the purpose of obtaining information from or notes on the news media members who act within the scope of newspaper activities.” The Ministry of Justice last month held a meeting with Media executives to discuss the formulation of new policies, after several media companies including the New York Times, CNN and Washington Post revealed that the notes of their journalists had been confiscated during the Trump era in an effort to identify their secret sources for security stories national.
The previous Ministry of Justice said it would stop the practice, but the details of the new policy have not been published until Monday.
