WASHINGTON: The Biden government announces new sanctions on Thursday against Cuban officials and government entities that are said to be involved in human rights violations during government demonstrators in protests on the island earlier this month.
The Asset Asset Office of the Ministry of Finance Department of the Department of Registered Department of Alvaro Lopez Miera, a Cuban Military and Political Leader, and Brigada, especially the Nacional Del Minister Del Interior, or a Special Ministry of Interior Brigade, as among those who will face the latest sanctions.
Treasury said in a statement that Lopez Miera “has played an integral role in the persecution of ongoing protests in Cuba.” The Cuban Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, led by Lopez Miera, and other Cuban government security services have attacked protesters and arrested or disappeared more than 100 protesters in an effort to suppress this protest, according to Treasury.
The Interior Ministry Special Brigade has been approved in January by Trump Administration, which targets all Ministry and Interior ministers of Lazaro Alvarez Casas under the global Magnitsky Act.
“I expressly condemned mass detention and false trials that unfairly punished their prison who dared to speak in an effort to intimidate and threaten the Cubans to be silent,” said President Joe Biden in a statement.
“Cubans have the same right for freedom of expression and assembly of peace as everyone.” The move came after the White House this week announced that Biden had commanded his government to take a few steps to raise pressure on the communist regime after thousands of Cubans took to the streets of Havana and other cities throughout the island to protest the shortages and prices high during the crisis Coronavirus.
The Ministry of Finance’s foreign asset control office has been assigned to explore the agreed Cuban officials who commit human rights violations on peaceful protesters in Cuba.
“Cubans protest the fundamental and universal rights that they deserve to receive from their government,” said the Finance Secretary Janet Yellen.
“The Ministry of Finance will continue to enforce Cuban-related sanctions, including those who enacted today, to support the Cuban community in the search for democracy and assistance from the Cuban regime.” Biden has also asked the Department of Foreign Affairs to launch a working group to review the US money transfer policy to ensure that the money sent by Cuban Americans made him directly into their family’s hands without regime.
Biden also ordered reviews about the feasibility of the rising staff at the embassy a.s.
in Havana.
The White House hopes that encouragement in staffing can help more facilitate the involvement of civil society followed one of Cuban’s largest anti-government demonstrations in recent memories.
“We have clarified for the past week that overcoming this moment is a priority for the administration and for the President of Biden,” said White Press Secretary Jen PSAKI.
