WASHINGTON: The US Ministry of Finance said on Wednesday it had imposed sanctions on eight Syrian prisons run by Syrian Presidential Intelligence Apparatus Bashar al-Assad and five senior officials who controlled the site, where human rights violations had occurred.
The Ministry of Finance also gave sanctions on Syrian armed groups Ahrar Al-Sharqiya, which operate in North Syria, for violations of civilians, as well as in two group leaders, he said in a statement.
“Today’s appointment promotes accountability for violations committed against the Syrian people and denies naughty actors to access international financial systems,” said Director of the Director of the Andrea Gacki Office of the Foreign Asset Office (OFAC).
“This action shows a strong commitment of the United States to target human rights violations in Syria, regardless of the perpetrators.” Prisons “have become sites for human rights violations on political prisoners and other detainees,” said the statement.
It accused Ahrar Al-Sharqiya from various crimes against civilians, especially the Syrian Kurds, “including the murder that violated the law, kidnapping, torture, and personal property seizures.” In a separate statement, the Ministry of Finance said that it had imposed sanctions on the Al Qaeda-based financial facilitator based to help militant groups and also one of Syrian-based terrorist fundraising and recruitment to provide material support to Hay’et Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS) , Militant groups previously approved under US counter-terrorism authorities.
