New York: said the United States on Wednesday will add to the third gender option to the US passport for people who do not define as men or women, in victory for non-binary and American intersex.
Wednesday’s announcement adds the United States to more and more countries that offer the third option – or “X” – on passports, including Canada, Germany, Australia and India.
The State Department also said that Americans no longer need to provide medical certification if they want to change gender on their passports.
It doesn’t say when the new “X” gender marker will be available, it’s just that it is in the process “evaluating the best approach to achieving this goal”.
“With this action, I express our eternal commitment to the LGBTQI + community today and move forward,” said US Condition Minister Antony Blinken in a statement.
Advocates LGBT + has long argued that the categories of men and women strictly distinguishes non-binary and intersex people, who are born with atypical chromosomes or sex characteristics.
Some states and US cities, including New York, have allowed Americans to choose the third gender on identification cards and some major airlines announce plans to follow
