Mumbai: A 40-year-old woman died after a fire broke out at Notan Villa on Jalan Sixth in Khar West at 7pm on Thursday.
Firefighting officials said that even though 49 people were saved, Hema Jagwani, stranded on the top floor, had suffocated and died before the firefight team could pull it out of the stairs.
The fire has been “closed from all parties” at the time of the press even though it was not completely extinguished, officials said.
According to the official website of the jewelry, the Jagwani family has experience in making jewelry and trade more than 100 years.
A senior brigade official said that three people, including Jagwani, remained stranded after all the others were pulled out.
When Jagwani was taken out, he rushed to Cooper Hospital.
The other two were stranded by using the ‘Turn Table Badders,’ said officials.
Both were identified as Palak Hema Jagwani, which was saved from the seventh floor (above) Villa, and Sangeeta Hitesh Thakur.
“Fireworks started from the electrical channel in the villa and quickly spread on the floor.
It must be investigated why the spread so fast,” said a fire department, adding that the fire had spread through the lobby lift and all the wooden doors from the ground floor to another floor .
Local Corporator ALKA KERKAR, which belongs to BJP, said that death was very unfortunate.
He said that Hema Jagwani had previously received a call when he was stranded because those who had been saved by firefighters had tried to contact him to find out if he was safe.
“I visited the site.
Hema Jagwani was stranded on the seventh floor, and when the place was filled with smoke, it became difficult to bring it out,” said Kerkar.
Local BJP Mla Ashish Shelar said in a tweet, “sad to report the API in a housing bungalow and one unprofitable death at 11 Rd Khar West.
Police, firefighters in locations and fires under control.
I along with @Alkankankar visited personally & ongoing cooling operation.
