Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman spoke with Prime Minister Haiti Ariel Henry on Sunday to reiterate Washington’s support and said the United States “has placed resources in place” to increase the surrounding country’s emergency response, a Ned Price spokesman said in a statement.
The head of USAID Samantha Power tweeted Sunday that the agency had deployed the search and urban rescue team of 65 people – equipped with “special tools, medical equipment & supplies” – to join the earthquake disaster response team in Haiti.
Haitian neighbors, the Dominican Republic said it was 10,000 food rations and medical equipment.
Mexico also sends free shipping.
Cuba and Ecuador sent a medical team or search and savior.
And Chile, Argentina, Peru and Venezuela also offer help, like the United Nations.
“We want to plan a response adapted better than in 2010 after the earthquake – all assistance coming from abroad must be coordinated by the Civil Protection Agency,” Henry said.
The 70th earthquake measuring in January 2010 left most of the Port-au-Prince and the closest cities in the ruins, killed more than 200,000.
More than 1.5 million Haitians were made homeless in the disaster, which also destroyed 60 percent of Haiti’s health care system, left the international authority and the international humanitarian community with the colossal challenges.
The latest earthquake came more than a month after President Jovenel Moise was killed at his home by a team of armed men, rocking a country that had struggled with poverty, gang violence and Covid-19.
The police said they had arrested 44 people in connection with the murder.
