Lucknow: The defecated scheme (ODF) has surpassed making the village free of open defecation and now the extension even motivates villagers to manage their plastic waste.
After the construction of toilets in every household under the Mission of Swachh Bharat to make ODF village, new components – Plastic waste management (PWM) – under ODF plus Swachh Bharat Misi-Gramin scheme (SBM-G), is being carried out in Uttar Pradesh because of waste Plastics and polythene are also threats in the village.
It has been one and a half months because the villages chosen under the first phase of the ODF scheme + get their plastic waste collected at the point of where it was sent for recycled and reused.
About 38 villages in Hardoi implemented PWM.
State IEC Consultant, SBM-G, Department of Pancayati Raj (PRD), Sanjay Singh Chauhan said, “The department has appointed Swachhta Sainiks who collect plastic from the household and throw it away at a plastic bank, which consists of an iron net where stored waste.” The department has made the provisions of RS 16 Lakh to establish a collection center in each block to store plastic waste from which it was sent to the recycling unit.
A fifth of the village will be borne in the first year of the ODF + scheme for PWM and other components.
The ODF scheme was launched in 2014 to build toilets in each household concluded in 2019, after the center launched ODF + and ODF ++ has more components including solid waste management (LWM).
ODF + village makes the toilet sustainable by continuing to monitor their maintenance, use and cover new families that appear under the scheme.
ODF ++ village also ensures collection, transportation, treatment, disposal of feces and waste mud in addition to proper toilet maintenance.
“We also told the villagers about the dangers of plastic, the exact disposal and motivate them by saying the benefits,” Chauhan said.
