Islamabad: Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday said the world must be involved with Afghanistan to overcome humanitarian needs and provide economic stability to prevent refugee crises in a torn war.
Khan spoke with the Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres by telephone and the two leaders discussed the development in Afghanistan, with a special focus on humanitarian situations.
According to a statement by the Prime Minister’s office, Khan underlined the need for an international community to become more engaged to Afghanistan, according to urgent priority to overcome humanitarian needs and ensure economic stability.
“Such steps will not only strengthen security but also block the exodus of the Afghan mass of their country, thus preventing the refugee crisis in Afghanistan,” he said.
Khan highlighted the importance of peace, stability, and inclusive political settlement in Afghanistan, emphasizing that the opportunity to ultimately end 40 years of conflict in the country must be confiscated by enabling Afghanistan to achieve eternal peace, security, and prosperity, said the statement.
He appreciated the UN’s vital role in providing humanitarian assistance that was needed to the Afghan people and highlighting the facilitation provided by Pakistan to the United Nations, including by helping evacuation and relocation efforts.
Convincing the collaboration of Pakistani Guterres with the United Nations in the fulfillment of his mandate, Khan reaffirmed the full support of Pakistan for the smooth operation of the United Nations Humanitarian Mission for Afghanistan, said the statement.
