New Delhi: There is no proposal to provide full interest in the Lakshadweep Union region, the government told the parliament Wednesday.
The Minister of State for Nityanand Rai’s home business said this in a written reply to Rajya Sabha.
He was asked whether the government had considered the full interest in Lakshadweep and what steps were taken to increase Lakshadweep’s participation in the democratic process.
“There is no such proposal for full coincidence for the Union Lakshadweep area being considered,” Minister said.
Adequate institutional arrangements exist for the expression of the democratic aspirations of the people in the United States which are thinly populated such as Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Daman, he said.
“People who live in UT choose their parliamentarians to Lok Sabha,” Rai said.
He then added that in the answer that UTS from Lakshadweep, Andaman and the Nicobar Islands, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Daman also have “strong Raj Pancayati systems with village and district Panchayat bodies, through community participation in the process of democracy”.
In Lakshadweep, a strong delegation and extensive function has been made for the local body, he said.
