Chennai: There is no public building that can be built in the state without providing access facilities and toilets for different people, Madras High Court has ruled.
“It is very important that all public buildings, including court houses, must have access that can be used by people with disabilities.
Toilets must also be installed in public buildings that can be used by people with disabilities,” the first bench from the chairman of Judge Sanjib Banerjee and justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy said on Monday.
The state is reminded that there are no new general buildings that can be built or approved or planned without providing access to people with disabilities and ensuring toilets and other facilities for these people, the court added.
Official respondents, especially the Department of Public Works and its officials, must get acquainted with government laws and national building codes, the court said.
This is to ensure that the compulsory instruction in it is obeyed without exception, he said.
The court made observations when he heard pills moved by M Karpagamis who strive to implement the provisions of the disability (PWD) (same opportunity, protection of full rights and participation) acting in the state.
When the request came to hear, P Muthukukar, advice for the state government, submit a report on behalf of the country.
Recording the same thing, the bench said that the report did not show whether public buildings throughout the country can be accessed by persons with disabilities.
“Because the current status report is submitted not to show the steps taken or the number of buildings where access for disabled people has been provided, let the problem for two months for a more detailed report to be submitted when it appears next,” Judge added, and postponed the next hearing in This is until September 13.
