Chennai: Most gasoline bunks in the city do not have a vapor recovery system (VRS), which can capture the release of dangerous organic compounds, according to reports submitted before the National Green Tribunal (NGT) by oil companies.
Every time the vehicle tank is replenished at the fuel station, gasoline steam tends to disappear into the atmosphere.
This steam contains cancer-causing substances such as benzene, toluene and xylene.
The Ministry’s Union Petroleum in 2016 has directed all public and private oil companies to install VRS at the fuel station to prevent gasoline steam out of the bed.
But there is a bad compliance with this Fiat.
In 2020, Chennai had around 250 bunks of gasoline.
But only 32 has a VRS installed in it.
Furthermore, the Advocate VBR Menon submitted a case with NGT Southern Bench in Chennai, called for immediate compliance with VRS rules because many fuel generators in the city were near housing buildings, schools and parks, etc.
slow in implementing rules.
They said that there were only two vendors agreed by the government who were eligible to install VR and the Supreme Court had directed them to complete the delayed work in the national capital based on priority.
Data is presented before NGT shows that some high turnover beds in Chennai do not have VRS facilities.
As a result, the court directs the CPCB to take appropriate action and impose environmental compensation (penalty) to the gasoline bed.
In addition, the southern bench NGT ordered all existing gasoline bunks to get a nod of the state pollution control board within six months.
The new outlet will also get board approval before starting the operation, read the order on December 23.
