Chennai: Madras High Court has resisted the irungap of Sipcot Industrial Estate or other authorities from installing construction on the ground falling under the Katarambakkam lake in Sriperambudur.
The Justice Division bench T Sivagnanam and Justice Sathi Kumar Sukumara Kurup passed the temporary order on Friday, on a defense driven by a group of farmers who accused of surpassing water limits with Sipcot.
According to the Petitioner, ‘Katrakkam Periya Eri’ spread at 128.34 hectares.
This is part of the lake system that leads to Chembarambakkam lake.
“Lake Chembarambakkam is located east of this lake and Lake Sugandiramedu is located in the west.
Water from Lake Sugandiramedu will flow to Lake Katrakkam and overflow from Lake Katrampaklkam will flow to Lake Chembarambakam, which is one of the biggest sources of water for Chennai,” the Petitioner said .
In 2016, Sipcot leveled most of the lake along the north side, for the construction of truck parking pages.
More than 10 hectares of lakes have been filled and built.
“We were misled by local authorities that the construction did not occur on the ground on the lake,” they said.
Again, in 2019, Sipcot used a machine that moved on earth and landed inside the lake in the northeast corner, west of the village.
However, after protest by villagers, Sipcot did not continue any activities, they added.
“For our surprise and surprise, a month ago Sipcot began holding 5-6 hectares of lakes.
We represented the Sipcot project officer that this was illegal and stopped from breaking the lake, however, the activity continued, and the fence erection was completed,” the Petitioner’s assembly was suspected.
Shows SIPCOT claims that it has also acquired the lake and that they are free to do what they are help, the Petitioner said, a waters cannot be converted for any purpose and water bodies cannot be allocated for industrial use for industrial use.
