The government has banned 20 YouTube channels and 2 websites to spread anti-Indian propaganda and fake news on the internet.
The ban announcement came after an effort coordinated carefully between intelligence agencies and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
The ministry provides two separate orders – one for 20 YouTube channels directed YouTube, and the other for 2 news sites, requested the Telecom (DOT) department to direct the Internet service provider to block channels / news portal.
According to the government, channels and websites belonging to a coordinated disinformation network operating from Pakistan and spreading fake news about various sensitive subjects related to India.
Channels are used to post content shared by coordinated ways on topics such as Kashmir, Indian Army, Minority Community in India, Ram Mandir, General Bipin Rawat, etc.
Modus Operandi Anti-India Disinformation Campaign involves Naya Pakistan Group (NPG), operating from Pakistan, having a YouTube channel network, and several other Mandiri YouTube channels that are not related to NPG.
Channels have a combined customer base of more than 35 lakh, and their videos have more than 55 crore views.
Some YouTube channels from Naya Pakistan Group (NPG) are operated by the Anchor of the Pakistan news channel.
This YouTube channel has also posted content on issues such as protests and farmer protests related to citizenship laws (amendments).
We are also feared that this YouTube channel will be used to post content to damage the upcoming election democratic process in five countries.
The ministry said that it had acted to secure information space in India, and utilized emergency power under the rules of 16 information technology (intermediary guidelines and digital media ethics codes), 2021.
The ministry observed that most of the content was related to the sensitive subjects from the national security perspective and Factual is wrong, and especially posted from Pakistan as a coordinated disinformation network (as in the case of Naya Pakistan Group) against India and thus is considered to be suitable for the provisions to block content in an emergency.
