Jaisalmer: Thar desert witnessed the unique phenomenon of this Monsun as a series of rare snake species was seen at regular intervals.
However, experts believe this is not a good sign for ecological balance.
Species such as Cobra India, Asian sand snakes and Red Spotted Royal Snake and Pivna are seen in the Barmer and Jaisalmer desert area.
According to experts, even though the appearance of general snakes due to increased moisture and monsoon, the rare species coming out in the open is something new and the main reason behind this is the thinning grassland land, which is allocated by the state government to establish a solar energy park and wind.
These projects affect snake habitat because of the large number of trees of the Khejadi and Kerer are being cut.
Apart from the regular appearance, many areas of the area report on average 8-10 cases of snakebites every day, said an expert.
Because of the uniqueness and lack of knowledge, snakes are killed by humans.
In the Desert Thar, there are around 20 snake species and only one third of venomous.
Because of the loss of habitat, there has been an increase in human snake conflicts, Shyam Sunder Meena said, assistant professor in zoology.
“Snakes play an important role in Thar’s ecological balance when they eat mice that cause huge losses for humans by destroying their plants, saved grains and eating food resources.
Mice also damage the reservoir of the water by making burrows on the wall,” Meena added ,
