MADURAI: Muthuvan tribes of Muthuvakudi Village in Bodinahurur, Theni, have overcome it with a Pandemic Covid-19 by following insulation steps quite early and by holding fast to their original diet.
Even one person in the village consisting of 35 families so far contracted by infection.
Located on the Bukit Kottakudi, Muthuvakudi is in the forest booked.
“Freshwater crabs and turkey berries are our common traditional food we take regularly since the Covid-19 pandemic begins to prevent coughing and cold,” said Thangappan, the native of the village.
Turkish berries or ‘sundakkai’ are fried or just mixed with green and eat.
Muthuvan Tribal Women said they spent most of their time during the locking period in the house and prepared kashayam ginger, turmeric, and pepper and consumed it to build immunity.
Tribal also moves inside to find food in the forest to reduce suffering during the locking period.
Other villagers, Ramadurai, said the village held a meeting with everyone in the settlement and decided not to go to the city, and also did not let anyone from outside entering it.
“If we go to buy essential food and vegetable items, we keep that person in isolation in huts for two days to identify symptoms,” he added.
About 25 Muthuvan tribes took part in the awareness camp held in their village by the Department of Communication, National University of Madurai Kamaraj for Communication Science and Technology, the Department of Science and Technology, Indian Government, on Friday.
Dr S Nagarathinam, Head, the Department of Communication, MKU, said the knowledge of traditional tribes would always help the community overcome a very difficult situation, even a pandemic.
“Our goal is to interact with the tribal community and create awareness about Covid-19 and Post Covid-19.
However, it surprises to see their understanding and knowledge,” he added.
During the program, Dr.
J Ipurugan, a doctor, said that the willingness of the tribes to understand the new situation was extraordinary.
All over 18 years among the Muthuvakudi tribes have taken Covid-19 vaccinations too.
