Thousands of Afghans protested the Taliban in the southern city of Kandahar on Tuesday, according to former government officials and local television recordings, after residents were asked to empty the housing army colony.
The protesters gathered in front of the governor’s house in Kandahar after around 3,000 families were asked to leave the colony, according to former government officials who watched the crowd.
Records from local media show a crowd of people who block the road in the city.
The affected area was occupied by the families of the general retirees and members of the other Afghan security forces.
Families, some of which have lived in the district for almost 30 years, have been given three days to empty, the official, who has spoken with some of those affected, said.
Taliban spokesman did not immediately respond to the request to comment on the eviction.
Sporadic protests against the Taliban, which swept power in Afghanistan with the arrest of Kabul almost a month ago, has ended in occasional deadly clashes, although there were no reports of violence confirmed on Tuesday.
Taliban leaders have vowed to investigate all examples of harassment, but have ordered the demonstrators to request permission before protests.
The United Nations said on Friday the Taliban response to peaceful protests became increasingly hard.
