Wellington: New Zealand enhanced security measures in parliament on Tuesday because thousands of people gathered to protest the covid-19 vaccine mandate and government locking.
All except for two entrances to the parliament building, known as a honeycomb, was closed with the police level and unprecedented security personnel, because most protesters opened a mask marching through Wellington Center and gathered outside parliament.
While peaceful demonstrations, many people look to hold signs and placards with messages such as “freedom” and “kiwi instead of lab mice” and shout slogans because they demand the government back vaccination and lift restrictions.
“I will not be forced and I will not be forced to take something I don’t want in my body,” said a protester outside of parliament.
“I asked (government) to give us back 2018.
Simple like that.
I want my freedom back.” New Zealand has struggled to fight an outbreak of the highly contagious Delta variant this year, force Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to move from elimination strategies through locking to live with a virus with a higher virus with a virus.
Ardern last month said the country would demand teachers and workers in the health and disability sectors to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19, and have promised to limit the end only after 90% of the population that meets inoculated.
The threshold is higher than many other countries and has invited criticism from people who call more freedom, while the mandate will be an obstacle for those who want to return to work but still avoid Jab.
“Treat us like people!” Another title exclaimed when asked about the government’s attitude in the vaccine mandate.
“I’m here for freedom.
The government, what they do, is anti-freedom.” New Zealand still has one of the lowest Covid-19 cases in the world with under 8,000 cases reported so far and 32 deaths.
It reported 125 new cases on Tuesday and the total level of vaccination dose has reached almost 80% of the population which qualified.
