Mumbai: City crime branch on Thursday arrested three Pune residents, including those who summoned senior revenue department officials in Mantalaya on Wednesday and demanded the transfer of an officer by mimicking the sound of NCP Sharad Pawar.
Callers use the spoof application, which indicates that the call comes from South Mumbai South Oak leader NCP.
However, senior official who received the call was suspicious and told the police.
The case was registered with the Gamdevi police against an unknown caller under the Indian Criminal Code Section cheating, forgery, punishment for trying to commit violations, the destruction of evidence and under the Information Technology Law.
Spoofing is an act of disguise communication from unknown sources as from a known and trusted source.
Spoofing can apply to email, phone calls and websites, or can be more technical, such as computers cheating IP addresses, address resolution protocols, or domain name system servers.
Anti-extortion cells from the crime branch, which conducted parallel investigations based on technical assistance, traced callers to Pune.
A team, led by the Yogesh Chavan Inspector, arrested Kiran Kakad (26), Vikas Gura (57) and Dhiraj Pathare (35).
The three were produced before the 37th Metropolitan Judge and returned to police custody until August 20.
In the relevant development, the Pimpri Chinchwad police in Pune on Thursday ordered three accused of disguising them as pawars and trying to squeeze Rs 5 Crore from brokers from Khed Taluka at 9.

“Mumbai police said they would investigate whether the same defendant had made a similar call as Minister of Walse Walse Patil’s country house from NCP regarding land transactions from Chakan in Pune District on August 9 registered at the Chakan Police Station.
In 2014, the crime property cells had captured the residents of Baramati Rahul Gade to allegedly imitate Sharad Pawar as well as his nephew Ajit Pawar, Ramdas Athaware, Late Shiv Sena Chief Bal Thackeray and Gopinath Munde to the Dupe of Prospective Government Jobs.
