Rupganj, Bangladesh: A big fire in a Bangladesh factory killed three people and injured at least 30 with some people jumping from the top floor to escape from fire, police said.
It is not clear how many people are trapped inside, although relatives who are confused outside and other factory workers say they are afraid that other people may not run away.
Fires are common in Bangladesh because of the enforcement of loose safety regulations.
In February 2019, 70 people died when Inferno ripped several blocks of Dhaka apartments.
The police and eyewitnesses said the fire broke out at the Hashem Food and Drink Factory at Rupganj, an industrial city outside Dhaka, around 5:00 a.m.
(1100 GMT) and was still raging on Friday morning.
“Three people have died after they suffered injury burns,” Jayedul Alam, regional police chief, told AFP.
At least 30 people were injured including some who jumped from the top floor after the fire quickly competed through a six-story factory, said Police Inspector Sheikh Kabirul Islam.
The police initially said dozens of workers were still missing but then pulled back and said they were not sure how many were not counted.
The fire department saved 25 people from the roof of the factory, which produced noodles and drinks, but could not confirm the victims further.
“After a controlled fire, we will carry out a search and rescue operation in it.
Then we can confirm the victim further, if any,” Debashish Bardhan, a fire spokesman, told AFP.
Mohammad Saiful, a factory worker who escaped from the fire, said there were dozens of people inside when the fire began.
“On the third floor, the gate on the two stairs was closed.
Other colleagues said there were 48 people in them.
I don’t know what happened to them,” he said.
Mamun, another worker, said he and 13 other workers ran to the roof after the fire broke on the ground floor and black smoke covered the entire factory.
“Fight fighters take us down by using a rope,” he told reporters.
When the smoke cloud billowed from a factory building, hundreds of confused people gathered outside to find out their kin updates.
One of them is Nazrul Islam.
“We came here because my niece did not receive our phone call for a while.
And now the phone does not ring at all.
We are worried,” he said.
