Chennai: Three masked robbers broke through the jewelry store at Vandalur on Sunday night and took cash lakh ₹ 1 after attacking the shop owner with a knife.
One of the suspects was arrested by community members when they tried to escape.
Police said Beru Singh, 39, from Ram Nagar in Mannivakkam running a jewelry cum pawn on Jalan Vandalur-Walajabad.
At 8:45 pm on Sunday, when he closed the shop, a car stopped and the three men who came said they wanted to buy jewelry.
Beru Singh explained the rules of Covid to close the business at 9pm and asked him to return on Monday.
“The trio told him that they needed jewelry for the wedding on Monday and Beru reopened his shop.
The three then pulled the window behind them and began to threaten Beru Singh in the knifepoint.
Someone took money in his pocket, the other two took the jewelry stored in the safe,” explained a cop.
When Singh tried to stop them, a robber cut it with a knife, leaving him with bleeding wounds.
Hearing Singh cried in pain, people in near-adjacent shops, the officer said.
While two suspects fled in the car with cash lakh ₹ 1, the third was arrested by people and was handed over to the police.
Singh was given first aid.
Based on his complaint to the Vandalur police, the police registered a case and questioned the suspect Nabbed.
They checked CCTV camera recordings too.
