New Delhi: Indian Authority Food Security Standards (FSSAI) has issued a ‘Eat right certificate’ for prison No.
2 In Tihar Prison Complex in Delhi.
This is a recognition of the quality and cleanliness of food which means the inmates will get quality food and food prepared in prisons for sale also meet the standards of cleanliness and quality set by state food regulators.
The process to make Tihar eat the right campus began in 2019, and prison was the first in this country to start such an initiative.
The certification process involves strict work and several levels of improvement based on the exact campus campus benchmark from FSSAI.
The process involving pre-audits by the Delhi Food Security Department team and private training partners, Indraprastha Academy Foundation.
The report submits detailed observations and recommendations to increase the level of hygiene, sanitation, and food security protocol under FSSAI.
More than 950 inmates, involved in the factory and kitchen, are trained in aspects of food safety, cleanliness and sanitation.
“Standard operating procedures are made for different operations in food places including kitchens and factories.
The Covid crisis slowed the job, but it regained momentum when the situation improved,” said Commissioner of IAS and commissioner of food security, Neha Bansal.
The final audit was carried out by third party agents and requests sent for recognition to FSSAI.
“Tihar was always close to my heart because I had seen it carefully during my work as DM Western District.
I am happy that we have also contributed to the process of improvement in which Tihar administration works tightly,” Bansal said.
“It is very encouraging to understand that detainees are willing to undergo sustainable training and become part of the process of improvement,” said a prison official who worked on the project.

“Bansal said the current work occurred for Mandoli and Rohini Prison certification.
The certification process for Mandoli prison has also begun and soon the process of other prison certification will also begin when they also meet the benchmark process requirements.
