TN: 7.5% of seats are provided in Engg, Agri & Law for Government Students

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu legislature on Thursday unanimously passed the bill to provide a 7.5% horizontal quota to government school students to receive the UG course in engineering, fisheries, animals, fisheries, laws and other professional institutions.
This quota applies to students who have studied from class VI to XII in state government schools.
Chief Minister M K Stalin said government school students could not secure the entrance ticket to professional courses because they could not compete with their colleagues from private schools due to socio-economic disparity.
Of the 8.5 lakh students, which appeared for the council exam in 2019-20, 3.45 students of Lakh came from a government school.
In 2020-21, only 0.83% of government students received an entrance ticket at Anna University, each 6.31% and 0.44% in engineering and assisted college each, 3% in veterinary courses, 3.7 % in fisheries, 4.89% in agriculture, and less than 1%.

Stalin given the introduction of a 15% reservation for rural students in a professional course in 1997 and the exemptions of fees were given to first generation graduates.
The country canceled the entrance test for professional courses in 2006 and acceptance was being carried out based on the sign of class XII since 2007-08, given the difficulties faced by students from rural areas and backwards, he said.
AIADMK and his allies, BJP, welcome the bill.
‘The bill will bring real equality among students, the previous AIADMK regime has imposed laws to provide the same quota with students for medical courses.
The bill came after a recent report from the Countries Commission led by retired Judge of Justice Durgesan.
Opposition leader Edappadi K Palaniswami said 40% of students in the state of study in government schools and most of them came from the economically weaker parts.
They cannot compete with private school students.
“We unanimously support this bill,” said the former cm.
The BJP floor leader Nainar Nagendran said he welcomed the bill on behalf of the party.
This was evident from the report of the Commission that there was inequality between government school students and private school students.
The government, after a careful examination of the Commission’s recommendation, has decided to take affirmative action, said the object statement and the reasons for the bill.
This will bring real equality between students, who study in government schools and in private schools, by distinguishing a certain percentage of seats with a preferential base, he said.
