CHENNAI: The number of active Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu dropped below the 2 lakh-mark on Thursday after 27 days.
At present there are 1,88,664 patients undergoing treatment for covid in the state almost a 30% drop compared to last week.
TN had the second highest number of active cases in the country next to Karnataka (2,10,652).
The state logged 16.813 new cases and 358 deaths on Thursday.
While Chennai dropped to fourth place in the total number of active cases (12,210), western districts occupied the top three spots.
Coimbatore (21,184) topped the chart followed by Tiruppur (17,485) and Erode (13,102).
Another western district, Salem, was fifth in this list with 10,168 active cases.
Even when it came to new cases, Coimbatore (2,236) and Erode (1,390) reported more cases than Chennai (1,223).
As a result, Chennai has almost double the number of oxygen supported and ICU beds at Covid hospitals.
Greater Chennai Corporation authorities attributed Chennai’s healthy recovery to effective implementation of the total lockdown.
However, drop in cases at Madurai (279), Trichy (470) and parts of north TN has brought down the total test positivity rate of the state below 10%.
This drop has been recorded even when the number of samples tested were increased to 1.81 lakh.
The drop coupled with a health recovery rate of 90.6 % has made covid bed availability scenario even better this week.
Despite drop in cases, number of deaths remains high in Tamil Nadu.
With another 358 people succumbing to the disease in the last 24 hours, the state’s cumulative covid toll increased to 28,528 — third in the country.
The case fatality ratio of the state remains 1.2 %.
