TN Civic Polling Schedule to Exit on September 15

Chennai: The Country Election Commission is likely to hold elections for rural local agencies in nine new districts at the end of September.
The Commission is expected to announce the voting date on September 15, the source said.
In June, the Supreme Court gave commission time until September 15 to conduct local agency polls, including publications and schedule notifications.
This even though the Commission believes that the Covid-19 pandemic is still raging throughout the state.
“The Commission will announce the poll schedule on September 15.
After a week to submit a nomination and withdrawal, the poll will be held at the end of September.
The parties will get adequate time to campaign,” said the source.
The election of this local body is waiting since October 2016 after that opposition, DMK, complained about errors in restriction training.
In the development related, the Assembly business advisory committee hurriedly met at 1pm on Wednesday to advance the debate about demand for grants for the government department for a week.
It decided to end the session on September 13, while the original schedule was September 21.
The meeting was attended by the leader of the house, S Durai Murugan, opposition leader Edappadi K Palaniswami, deputy opposition leader, o Panneerselvam and opposition leader.
Minister of Man Chief M K Stalin did not take part.
The source said that the election was not discussed at the meeting, but there were indications about polls.
“There is no official discussion of the local agency poll, but the government wants a budget debate to end quickly,” said a leader, Privy for discussion.
The commission, said Source, has held a preparatory talks with recent district administrators to speed up the process of notification of polls.
The districts are Kancheepuram, Chengalpet, Vellore, Tirupathur, Ranipet, Villupuram, Kalakurichi, Tirunelveli and Tenkasi.
The powerful and opposition DMK, AIADMK has held a meeting with their respective district functionaries.
AIADMK and its allies, BJP and PMK, won 12 out of 45 seats in nine districts where local rural polls will be held.
The opposition does not have a representation at Kancheepuram, with Congress and DMK bagging the four constituencies.
AIADMK won a chair in Chengalpet, Vellore, Tirupathur, Kalakurichi and Tirunelveli.
