TirunelVeli: Construction of 2,000 megawatts (2 x 1000) units 5 and 6 in the Kudukulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) begins with the ‘first cast of concrete’ on Tuesday.
The project, to be completed at RS 49,621 crore expenditure, was launched by the Chairperson of the Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy Kamesh Nilkanth Vyas through video conferencing.
KKNPT consists of six units of light water reactors with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts.
It was established in technical cooperation with the Russian Federation.
This project is being implemented in three phases with 2 x 1000 MW in each phase.
Construction of units 3 and 4 are underway in the second phase and these units with a total capacity of 2,000 MW nearly 50% complete.
The ceremony was marked by pouring 6,200 cubic meters of concrete.
Construction unit 5 and 6 will be completed in 66 and 75 months each.
The construction of two units will be carried out by Larsen and Toubro (L & T) limited engaged in the construction of units 3 and 4 which are ongoing almost 50% complete.
Working to do by L & T at Rs 2,305 Crore including reactor construction, auxiliary reactors, turbines and diesel generator buildings and safety structures.
While KKNPP relies on Russia for each component used in the first two reactors (units 1 and 2), are studied that around 36% of the components that will be used in units 5 and 6 will be made in India.
In the completion of these projects, six units at the KKNP will produce 6,000 MW of clean electricity by the second half of 2027, making it the largest electricity-producing complex in India, Vyas said.
The chairman expressed confidence that the reactor at KKNPP would put India among the pioneers of nuclear energy-producing countries globally.
This will also make a significant contribution to the growth of Tamil Nadu, he added.
He mentioned the construction of the KKNPT reactor for a star from Indo-Russian strategic cooperation, despite the Pandemic Covid-19.
Both countries are determined to complete development in the scheduled time, he said.
Director General of the Russian Nuclear Nuclear Company (Rosatom) Dr.
Alexey Likhachev who almost spoke from Moscow, said the third plus water reactor that was built in KKNPP would have the latest technology to make the safest reactor.
Chairman and Director of Implementing Corporation Power Nuclear India Limited Satish Kumar Sharma said that units 1 and 2 have produced more than 57.4 billion carbon-free green energy units because they were assigned.
While global warming is a serious problem that is a world concern, KKNPM plays an important role in producing green energy.
Contributions will be more when the factory produces 6,000 MW, he added.
