Chennai: At least 35 people died because Covid-19 on Wednesday, when Tamil added 26,981 new cases compared to 23888 cases on Tuesday.
“We expect an increase in cases following lively activity and last week’s trip,” said Minister of Health MA Subramanian.
“But the cause of concern is death among parents.
More than 80% of deaths reporting over the past few days is among people over 60 years,” he said.
On Wednesday, except for a 45-year-old woman all the others on the deceased list were above 60 years.
There were six people in his 60s, thirteen in the 70s, 12 in their 80s and one in the 90s.
On Tuesday, 24 of the 29 deaths were among people over 60 years.
On Monday, it was 16 of the 20 deaths reported and on Sunday was 16 of the 22 deaths.
Health officials said it was important for all parents to take at least two doses of vaccines.
“More than half the elderly population has not finished the course,” said Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan.
The weekly average death of TN reports every day 24 compared to 15 weeks ago on January 13.
Of the 35 deaths, Chennai reported 12, Chengalpet had five Kancheepuram recorded three and there each at Erode Madurai and Trichy.
Other nine districts – Coimbatore, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Namakkal, Vellore, Ramanathapuram, Nilgiris, Ranipet and Dindigul – report one of their respective deaths.
In the end there were 1.70 lakh active cases.
Meanwhile 1.4 lakh people over 15 years took vaccines on Wednesday.
So far, 1.17 Lakh people have taken the primary dosage since January 10.
