Madurai: Police units in the southern district of Tamil Nadu have increased actions against the aban and the economic impact of two waves of Covid-19 has forced people from low-income groups to borrow money with exorbitant interest rates from them.
The police have increased the action after an increase seen in the number of complaints of usury received over the past few days.
Tuticorin Regency Police Supervisor (SP) Jayakumar on Wednesday issued a warning that the seizers would be detained under the laws of Goonda in addition to strict legal actions taken against them.
“Many lose jobs because of the pandemic and economic impact.
This has made them difficult to repay the loans they get for exorbitant interest rates,” he said.
Recently, police Tuticorin Center and Police Alwarthirunagari arrested two explorers based on complaints of threats.

Dindigul SP District Ravali Priya has formed seven special teams, each of which is led by an officer in the rank of police deputy supervisor (DSP) in each one in all seven sub-divisions in the district.
The teams were formed after an increase in complaints of harassment by the resemblance in the district.
Police sources said that only two cases were registered in the district under the prohibition of Tamil Nadu for filling Exorbitan Law, 2003, in 2020.
But seven such cases were in the first six months of this year.
Of the seven cases, four have been registered against Vedasandur-based groups that have harassed those who borrow money from them.
Apart from the complaint submitted by the public, the special team also conducted an independent investigation into the seizure by gathering input from their intelligence unit.
People affected by Riba can submit complaints with evidence in their respective SP or DSP offices.
Those who cannot reach police officers personally can also report them by telephone to the special branch police unit office at the District Police Station at 9498101520.
