MADURAI: Personal handloom units in Sellur have urged the authorities to provide them both the 200 units of free electricity that has been discontinued for the last few decades.
They stated the livelihood of over 1,000 individuals, predominantly girls, depended upon the resurrection of the industry in Sellur alone.
Personal Handloom Manufacturers Association president Subash Chandrabose stated Sellur was when the handloom heart of Madurai town, together with over 40 to 50 units using tens of thousands.
Although the 1993 flooding led to closing of the vast majority of the components, 10 to 12 of them continued to offer jobs, particularly girls, who make less than Rs 100 every day.
In 2010, late chief minister M Karunanidhi declared 100 units of free electricity for handloom units and 200 components for powerloom units.
J Jayalalithaa improved this particular manuscript to 200 components for handlooms and 500 components for powerlooms.
But this was discontinued for the last few decades along with the AIADMK government didn’t provide free power to handloom units although electricity looms continued to benefit from the advantage.

The cost of yarn had increased from Rs 1,100 to get a 5-kilogram package three weeks back to Rs 1,400 now.
Chandrabose stated the authorities must take action to control dye cost.
