Chennai: With enough water in the four reservoirs lasting for the next 10 months, Metrowater has decided to maintain a daily supply of 1,000 million liters of water to households in the core and added area.
In January 2021, it only supplied 830 million liters every day.
A senior Metrowater official said this was the second year in a row in which a combination of Poondi, Cholavaram, Red Hills and Chembarambakkam had reached 10,000+ million cubic feet (MCFT) in January.
As on Tuesday, reserves reached 10,909 MCFT; In January 2021, it was 10,481 MCFT.
According to data, the combined reserve was marked to 1,686 MCFT in January 2017 of the same month 9,848 MCFT in 2016.
In January 2018, the reserve reached 4,952 MCFT, but a Monsun failed that year took a backup for all-time-low 1,389 MCFT in January 2019.
Metrowater must carry water from Jolarpet, an official said.
Of the four reservoirs, water is lost at an average rate of 40 cubic feet per second (cusecs) due to evaporation, percolation and seepage, said a senior PWD official.
The overall water loss in this way will be at a rate of around 3,620 cusecs a month.
It can be noted that Metrowater has not attracted water from the new reservoir of Kannankottai ThervaKandigai.
