Madurai: In the first for 140-year-old institutions, American College in Madurai celebrated the 100th birthday of one of its legendary alumni, n Sankaraiah.
Paying award to a great leader, Principal Davamani Christober, said they were honored to have a Sankaraiah as their students even now, because he had not completed his final exam because he was arrested for participating in anti-English protests when there was a fair 15 days for his final examination.
The leader joined the American College in 1937 and registered in the BA historical class.
Sankaraiah always recalled how American College, with its teaching faculty, has provided a conducive atmosphere for students who want to participate in the struggle.
The Madurai Student Movement began when Sankaraiah was a student, and he became the first secretary of the movement, instilling a fire for freedom among students.
Among the leaders who have spoken to students on the command of Sankaraiah is Subash Chandra Bose and Rajaji.
Food Minister and Civil Equipment R Sakkarapani, who is also an alumni of college, is present at the Institute to participate in birthday celebrations.
Sakkarapan said that he was honored to know that Sankaraiah had become his alma mater student.
Former MLA N Nanmaran and Madurai MP Su Venkatsan also participated.
CPM lifted the party flag in 100 places in Madurai City and distributed sweets to the public to celebrate their leader’s birthday.
Hundreds of Dyfi members conducted Silambam’s performance and organized SFI blood donor camps.
