Trichy: A concrete block from the bridge being built across the Kollidam River in Anaikkai near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur falls in early Saturday when placed using a giant crane between two ranges.
Thanjavur Collector Dinesh Ponraj Oliver said that mechanical failure caused the incident and that no one was injured and there was no damage caused by the structure.
A total of 15 workers involved in the work jumped into the water safely.
The bridge was being built at a cost of Rs 100 Crore for 1.2 kilometers from Thathuvanjeri to Kekannavanallur to connect Chennai through Ariyalur.
An Indian National Highway Authority official (NHAI) said a block was placed using a giant crane between span of 16 and 17 when the accident occurred.
Hose one of the four Jacks that went bankrupt resulted in the main block of crashing while being appointed to be placed on the pillar.
Infrastructure Patel Private Limited is executing the project.
“This is a big and challenging job.
Go with a preliminary investigation, it happened because of Jack Breaking,” said the Dinesh Collector Ponraj Oliver to Ti.
He said Nhai would see the technical aspects of the incident.
The whole bridge was covered by 19 ranges working at 10 ranges it was over.
This project is expected to end in March 2023.
With Saturday incident, the district administration looks at uncertainty through the settlement of bridges and allows free traffic flow and easy connectivity.
The construction of a four-way bridge is part of the Thinjavur highway project – Vikkiravandi.
Traffic was limited to light motorized vehicles on the centuries bridge which was in a weakening stretch.
