Chennai: The State Department of Forest and Tourism will work hand in hand to promote ecotourism.
While Tamil Nadu Wilderness experiences corporations, functioning under the Ministry of Forestry, have identified five eco-tourism places, the Department of Tourism tends to see streamlining activities such as treks and camping in forest areas.
Although eco-tourism began in the country a decade ago, his potential remained untapped.
Tracks and camps are being held on a small scale informally at the hill station.
The Tourism Department is watching requests by streamlining things.
A Tourism Department official said this idea was to generate income for the Department of Forest and Tourism by promoting ecotourism.
Forest land cannot be rented on private operators under the Environmental Protection Act.
TN tries to follow the example of Karnataka and Kerala, where camping, guided tours, safari forests and trekking are offered as part of the eco-tourism package.
Stakeholders in the tourism sector say even though there is request, there is not enough facilities for eco tourism in the state.
They show that Eko tourism will not only attract domestic tourists, but also a large international traveler that will fly down if the infrastructure is good.
N Ravi, a former manager with corporation of Tamil Nadu tourism development, said TTDC was a operating package involving the eco-tourism aspects to Anamalai, Koli Hill and Yercaud from Chennai 10 years ago.
“We even trekking in Tirusulam Hillock in the city along with the Ministry of Forestry.
Interestingly, high traction among young people and senior citizens,” he said.
In addition, when the eco-tourism package is offered by government departments in forest areas, safety and security of guaranteed travelers, he added.
